2019 Chalk Walk

Thought to have originated in Italy in the 16th century, street painting is a growing event at many community festivals. Originally, the artwork was of a religious nature, therefore the artists were called, "Madonnari". Vagabond artists would travel throughout Italy between festivals living solely on the coins tossed onto or next to their drawings as homage to the Madonna or possibly to their abilities. For centuries the Madonnari were true folk artists, but suffered a decline after World War II.

Dogwood Arts, for the eighth year in a row, is bringing this event to Knoxville as a way to teach and promote the history of this lost art to all ages and levels of artists. It will be a special experience for those who participate and for those who come to watch.
Location, Date & Time

The sidewalk areas and pavement of Krutch Park and Market Square allows for approximately 6' x 6' to 9' x 9' areas to work within. You do not have to fill that entire space, but we do ask that you complete at least a 4' x 4' section. The spaces are marked for the participants to choose from upon arrival to check in morning of the event.

The Chalk Walk will be a one-day event taking place on Saturday, April 6 with the rain date on Sunday, April 7. The artists will start at 8:00 am and have until 4:30 pm to complete their work. At 4:30, the judges will make their final rounds.

Prior to the event, Dogwood Arts will host a free workshop at the KMA; date to be announced.
